Cradle de Nata
The Jeromimos Monestary in Lisbon is a stunning place with a particularly special cloister (rivaled in my experience only by the cloisters at Durham Cathedral). However, the cloisters are not the only draw to Jeromimos — this monastery is where Portugal’s most loved pastry was invented: the Pastel de Nata. The monastery used huge amounts of egg whites for starching linens, and the leftover egg yolks we used for Pastel de Nata.
Technically the original Pastel de Nata is still made and sold today by the nearby Pasteis de Belem, however after a taste test we determined that the superior Nata can be found at Manteigaria.
